The Santa Maddalena wine is produced in some districts of the communes of Bolzano, Terlano, San Genesio and Renon. It derives its name from that of a hamlet in the commune of Bolzano. St. Magdalener, which is made in limited quantity, is a big, full-bodied and aromatic wine that goes quite well with the robust game dishes of the Alps. It was reported toward the middle of the 19th century, in fact, that it was the only wine that was capable of accompanying in adequate fashion a succulent dish of bear's paw, a "delicacy" much appreciated in the area at that time. Santa Maddalena is produced from Schiava grapes. From a study on varieties cultivated in the Alto Adige at the end of the last century, which was published in 1894 by the director of the Agrarian Institute at San Michele all'Adige, Professor Mach, it is known that Schiava and Gesehlaferre were the prevalent red-grape types. Within the Schiava family, the Gentile subvariety was already preferred by growers. The Schiava Grossa or Nobile was better known as a table than a wine grape and was in demand throughout Europe under the name Uva Meranese di Cura.
